INDIANAPOLIS — Three people were shot inside an apartment on the city's northeast side that had children inside, leaving behind bullet holes, glass on the ground, and a now-boarded-up door.
The shots rang out about 11:45 p.m. Monday in the 10100 block of John Marshall North Drive at the Amber Woods Apartments, near That's near 38th Street and North Mitthoefer Road.
Three children were inside when bullets sprayed through the apartment.
"I heard about six or seven shots, and I tried to hit the ground with my son because that's the first thing I know to do," said resident Rayonna Guyton.
Moments later, Guyton heard her neighbor run outside.
"I heard her come out the house yelling someone had gotten shot and I see them pull like two people out and take them to the hospital," said Guyton.
Indianapolis police say shots came from outside the apartments through a downstairs window, wounding one male and two females, one of whom was left in serious condition.
Police do not believe this was a random act of violence.
Another neighbor said her children were also just feet away from the unit shot into several times.
"It's a lot. My kids were home. They've been up all night," that person said. "It's scary sitting downstairs, you know just not knowing. I mean, this is every other day."
Guyton said the sound of gunfire isn't uncommon at Amber Woods Apartments.
"I am used to hearing gunfire, but not up close and personal. It was scary to hear it that close. It was real scary," said Guyton. "It's sad because my daughter wants to come out here and I don't let her."
The complex has been the scene of deadly shootings and other crimes and is in an area of the city that hat has had historically high violent crime rates.
In August 2021, 21-year-old Chandler Beach was killed and another was injured in a shooting there.
Then in December 2021, a 10-year-old boy was shot in his sleep.
The shooting Monday also caused nearby units to flood. It's believed a bullet struck a water main.
Amber Woods Apartments management says it has 24/7 surveillance cameras on the property.
Management declined to comment when asked if cameras were running at the time of the shooting.
An investigation is ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
