Ind. — Students at multiple schools are having early dismissal Monday due to the funeral procession for fallen Richmond Police Officer Seara Burton.
The procession will travel through Greenfield on US 40, which will make it not possible for school buses and drivers to cross the road.
Due to this, students at Greenfield-Central High School and Greenfield Central Junior High School will be released at 1 p.m., according to a message from the district.
"We have elected to release students early to avoid the need to hold them until the procession finishes," the message read. "Our hearts go out to Officer Burton's family, and we extend our gratitude to her fellow officers participating in this event."
All other Greenfield-Central schools will dismiss at normal time on Monday.
In a statement, the South Henry School Corporation says US 40 is a "major thoroughfare within our Corporation boundaries" and the procession could be in the area around when the district would normally dismiss students.
On Monday, elementary car riders will be dismissed at approximately 1:20 p.m., elementary bus riders will be dismissed at approximately 1:25 p.m. and junior/senior high school students will be released at approximately 1:30 p.m.
"I also strongly encourage you to use this as an opportunity to teach your children about respect for those who selflessly serve our communities and have made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety. I am incredibly grateful for those who keep us safe each and every day. I would love for the Titan family to be well-represented along US40 to pay respect for Ms. Burton and her family," Jeremy Duncan, South Henry School Corporation Superintendent of Schools, said in an email.
Eastern Hancock Schools will dismiss two hours early on Monday.
Richmond Community Schools are on an e-learning day. In Knightstown, all Charles A. Beard Memorial Schools will be dismissing at 2 p.m. Monday.
Centerville schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. Rose-Hamilton Elementary School students will be released slightly earlier, at 12:45 p.m.
"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause as we try to accommodate our families and the community during this difficult time," the district said in a statement.
According to the Richmond Police Department, the procession route is as follows:
- Richmond High School to Southwest G Street
- East (Left) on Southwest G Street to South 5th Street
- North(Left) onto South 5th Street to North A Street (US 40)
- West (Left) onto North A Street (US 40) to East Main Street
- West(Right) on East Main Street to Southwest 5th Street
- South(Left) on Southwest 5th Street to US 40
- West (Right) on US 40 to Illinois Street
- North (Right) on Illinois Street to 34th Street
- West (Left) onto 34th Street into Crown Hill Cemetery
